The magic behind Lucy Pevensie’s props
When it comes to iconic props from The Chronicles of Narnia film series, few items are as memorable as Lucy Pevensie’s props. These small yet powerful items play a crucial role in the story, embodying the magic and wonder of Narnia while showcasing the attention to detail in the film’s prop design.
Lucy’s cordial
Lucy’s cordial, a gift from Father Christmas, is described in C.S. Lewis’s books as a small bottle containing the juice of the Fire-Flower, capable of healing almost any wound or illness with just a drop. The movie adaptation brought this magical elixir to life with a beautifully crafted bottle made of resin. Inside, the filmmakers used strawberry-flavored juice to create the illusion of the Fire-Flower’s essence, giving it a rich, vibrant red hue.
The design of the cordial itself is intricate, featuring beautiful gold details that become more pronounced when filled with liquid. A sun can be seen with sun rays and a bird in front of 2 mountains, depicting a moment in the story of Ramandu in which the Bird of Morning flies back from the Mountains of the Sun. Topping off the cordial is a lion-shaped stopper, a subtle yet meaningful nod to Aslan, the great lion of Narnia. A delicate chain attached to the stopper ensures that the topper won’t fall off when opening the cordial, adding a touch of elegance. The juice itself sits flush in the middle of the cordial, keeping the sides clear creating a more neat and clean appearance
Lucy’s dagger
In addition to the healing cordial, Lucy is also given a small dagger by Father Christmas. Though she is advised not to engage in battle, the dagger symbolizes her bravery and readiness to defend those in need. The film’s version of Lucy’s dagger features an ornate hilt and a slender, sharp blade. The handle for the dagger is detailed with the pattern that looks to be the same as her main belt pattern but with slight modifications. This handle was either made out of resin or wrapped in leather for more closed up shots. The pommel of the back is the same design as her cordial topper with the addition of leaves.
Lucy’s dagger is accompanied by a beautifully crafted sheath that mirrors the details of the dagger’s handle. The sheath is adorned with the same intricate patterns and maintains a consistent color palette, ensuring a cohesive and elegant design. Metal or resin accents embellish the sheath, adding to its regal and historical feel. Additionally, small hoops are integrated into the sheath’s design, allowing it to be easily attached to a belt.
Lucy’s belt
Lucy’s belt is another beautifully designed piece, featuring striking patterns that add to her regal yet adventurous aesthetic. The belt is crafted from leather and secured with detailed metal buckles. The back buckle is adorned with a floral engraving, maintaining the natural and intricate motifs found throughout her accessories.
While the dagger sheath and belt maintain a cohesive look, the strap that secures the dagger differs slightly—it is thinner and features a unique pattern that sets it apart while still blending seamlessly with the overall design of Lucy’s accessories.
The pouch that holds the cordial is a unique and significant part of her costume. While it appears to be made of leather, it is actually a blend of different materials at times, ensuring both durability and aesthetic appeal. The front panel of the pouch features a design reminiscent of glancing sun rays, much like the shimmering effect of the cordial. A button with Aslan’s head is attached on the front, reinforcing its connection to Narnia’s great lion. On the bottom there is a detailed piece with lots of leaves elevating the pouch even more.
Color differences
Like with all of the Pevensie props, the color palette of Lucy’s items evolves from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe to Prince Caspian. This change was most likely made by the filmmakers to give the props a more aged and weathered appearance, emphasizing the passage of time and the many adventures the Pevensies have embarked on.
In The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, Lucy’s cordial, dagger, and belt feature vibrant red colors and polished finishes, appearing fresh and new as they were recently gifted by Father Christmas.
by Prince Caspian, these items take on a more worn look. The belt and straps appear more of a dark color rather than vibrant red, the gold accents are a bit muted and the dagger matches this color pallet now too, the cordial itself does not appear to change.
How we recreated these props
The healing cordial has been carefully designed to match the on-screen version, complete with an intricate stopper and a chain. It is available in two versions:
an empty bottle, perfect for those who wish to fill it with their own liquid.
an epoxy-filled version. The epoxy-filled cordial maintains the appearance of liquid inside but eliminates the hassle of carrying real liquid, making it ideal for collectors and cosplayers alike.
Lucy’s dagger will be meticulously crafted from metal, featuring intricate detailing on both the blade and hilt. It will be available in the two different color versions, allowing fans to choose the one that best suits their preferred representation of Lucy’s weapon.
The belt can be purchased in both The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and Prince Caspian versions, reflecting the differences in color and weathering. Made from high-quality leather, the belt stays true to the original design. The pouch, while appearing like leather, is actually crafted from a flexible resin to ensure durability while maintaining an authentic look. The buckles will be faithfully replicated and coated in gold metal.
